So I love my Canon 5DM2, but there's one specific issue that I hate about it: It only does 3-exp auto bracketing.  Come on, Canon.  Nikon does NINE!  So I'm trying to figure out how to get 9 bracketed shots on my 5D, 1 stop apart.

Does anyone have an easy way for me to do this, and if so, could you give me a step-by-step list?

I read something about 'Magic Lantern' which is kind of a third-party add-on for Canon's firmware.  It says that it fixes the auto bracketing but i can't find out more info about it (or I'm just not looking in the right place).

HELP!

thx...

Hello Mel,

Yes, Magic Lantern will allow extended bracketing on the 5DM2. It is as simple as downloading the firmware, loading it on your camera, and setting the exposure bracket. Here is a blog with some info:

http://www.photoshopcafe.com/tutorials/magicLantern/magic_lantern.htm

There are two other ways to to it:

1) Manually - just turn the shutter dial and click *{;-)
2) Take multiple 3 set AEB using exposure compensation. This method causes duplicate exposures that will need to be deleted later.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, David.  I had a feeling someone here would be familiar with it.

Now, does that mean that Magic Lantern will allow me to shoot, let's say, 9 bracketed shots, 1 stop apart?

I want my photos to look like these:

Awesome stuff, but he shoots 9 shots, +/-1.  Any suggestions?

Hello Mel,

According to what I read, Magic Lantern will allow up to 13 exposures from 1/3rd to 3 EV spacing. So yes it will do 9 at 1 EV.

Of course I do not have Magic Lantern, much less a 5DM2 *{;-)

LOL!  Thanks, David.  Glad one of us can find that info!  Now I have to decide if I want to mess around w/third-party firmware support.  I wonder if it will void my warranty...

Mel,

It does not void the warranty as it does not change anything about the camera. It loads on a card and when you remove the card it goes away. Same as the CHDK for Canon point and shoots. I use a version of this (called StereoData Maker) for syncing my A590's for stereo images.
